Ceuta is an autonomous Spanish town on the North African coastline of Morocco. Located on a peninsula jutting out into the Mediterranean, Cueta offers a blend of fine architecture, intriguing museums, excellent cuisine and stunning natural landscapes. The city’s museums include the Museo de la Basilica Tardorromana and the Military Museum of the Legion, established in 1940 to celebrate the Spanish Legion. The Parque Marítimo del Mediterráneo is a leisure complex consisting of three artificial lakes of salt water, filtered directly from the sea.

Cartagena is often seen as one of Spain’s less well-known cities, but take a wander through its ancient streets, and you’ll discover the carefully restored Roman Amphitheatre, which once held 6,000 spectators. There will also be opportunities to marvel at modernist Art Nouveau buildings, and take the panoramic lift to the top of Concepcion Castle for remarkable views across the surrounding harbour. The local language is Sardu, and so Cagliari is known as Casteddu, meaning castle. The ancient city is dominated by palazzi and domed structures, leading to the iconic hilltop citadel Il Castello, where the old medieval city is a maze of intriguingly narrow high-walled alleyways.

Rising out of the sea off Sicily’s north-eastern coast are the UNESCO-listed Aeolian Islands. The seven islands have been formed from many volcanic eruptions over time. Known as a ‘little piece of paradise’, each of the islands possesses a unique identity with cultural or natural features. One of the most prominent is Stromboli, home to an active volcano that constantly erupts. A short journey from the coast of Stromboli is the Strombolicchio, a mighty sea stack that soars out of the waters.

As you arrive, you can watch the sunrise off the coast, and after wandering through the town and indulging in duty-free shopping at Main Street, you are perfectly placed to take the cable car to the top of the Rock for unrivalled views across to Africa, Spain and over the Straits of Gibraltar, and to meet the famously mischievous Barbary macaques, Europe’s only wild monkey population. There will be opportunities to sample local dishes like calentita (chickpea flour bread) and rosto (a delicious meat and tomato pasta). You may also wish to discover the network of tunnels within the Rock, which played a strategic role in World War II.
